What Amazon allows
From KDP's Customer Reviews help page (checked 3 November 2026):
- You may give free or discounted copies of your book to readers, as long as you do not require a review in exchange or attempt to influence the review.
- Anything other than a free or discounted copy, including gift cards, invalidates a review, and Amazon removes it.
- Reviews are posted only after the Amazon Community team confirms they meet its Community Guidelines, which include rules against reviews posted in exchange for compensation.
- If a reader tells you a review is missing, Amazon asks you to send them to the Amazon Community team.
Read Amazon's current pages before every campaign. Its guidelines can change, and they are the final word.
What gets reviews removed
- Paying for a review, or giving a gift card, bonus, prize entry or refund in return for one.
- Making a free copy conditional on a review, or on a positive review.
- Asking for a particular star rating or for favourable wording.
- Swapping reviews with other authors, or pressuring friends and readers to post.
A legal plan for honest reviews
- Build a list of interested readers. Your newsletter, readers who asked for early copies, and a review copy service that matches readers by genre.
- Offer the copy freely. Say plainly that a review is welcome but not required, and that honest opinions, good or bad, are what you want.
- Deliver the book easily. EPUB or PDF works with Amazon's Send to Kindle. If your ebook is in KDP Select, use a delivery method you are allowed to use, such as Amazon promo links, print copies or audiobook codes.
- Send one neutral reminder. A note with the book's review link near the end of the reading window, with no rating request.
- Accept every outcome. Some readers will not finish or will not post. Private feedback is still useful.
How Review Copy Club keeps a campaign within the rules
- Authors pay for matching, delivery, reminders and reporting, never for reviews: $29 per book (less in 10- and 25-book packs) plus $2.50 per reader who claims.
- No guaranteed review counts, no star-rating promises or positive-review requests, and no rewards to readers for reviewing.
- Readers never pay, and may post a review, send private feedback or close the claim without reviewing.
- Reader names and emails stay private, so there is no direct author pressure.
- Each ebook copy is watermarked to its reader.
